Cruising

OPCYC Cruising Program for 2013

Most of us have friends who have retired, raised the family, sold the house, moved aboard, got underway and took their dock lines with them. Certainly we have good friends scattered throughout the Caribbean who tell people that they are “cruising”. (A little deeper in the discussion they say that they are really, “Working on their boat in exotic locations.”) That’s NOT quite what our OPCYC Cruising Program is about. More accurately, we aim to safely enjoy our boats in the company of like-minded good friends, make memories in new destinations and refresh good memories in familiar surroundings. There is ample opportunity to learn, teach, lead and follow. Our program is balanced to appeal to sailors and power boaters, marina dwellers and on-the-hookers, and adventurers and the cautious. We will explore the beautiful waterways and ports of our tri-state area.

Please carefully review the calendar to find the events and dates that work for you. We hope that this will allow your enough time to adjust your life schedule around what is really important—enjoying your boat and the company of fellow Pointers!

As in the past, we will kick off the season by “blessing the fleet” and then providing an opportunity to “inspect the fleet”. The planned destinations throughout the season are intended to offer opportunities for those whose time is budgeted with the addition of “Captains’ Choice” itinerary extensions for those who can spare additional time for additional fun. Most of you know that the key ingredient in making each cruise work is the “Cruise Captain” (good weather also helps). This is where you, the membership make it happen. Some of you are seasoned salts, and we know we can count on you. Others have never played this role. How about this year, giving it a shot? Some of our more experienced cruisers are happy to back you up, as you are the leaders. New leadership—new ideas—new energy, these are the key ingredients of an exciting program. So, please step up.

Finally, we all offer a hardy “Bravo Zulu” (well done) to John Pence and Mark Radler as they built the strong foundation on which our cruise program is based. We’ll do our best to keep the revs up.

So let us know what you think:

We will have an opportunity to enjoy one another’s company, share sea stories, and fondly remember another wonderful cruising season. We look forward to having you join us on as many cruising adventures as possible.

Nobody made reservations for the Club at Cape Charles

Just called harbormaster and managed to get one of the last slips available - not on a floating dock. He said that OPCYC intended for captains to make their own reservations. I had no clue that was the policy, mainly because of misinformation.

Cruise Captain Guide says that the cruise captain is supposed to make reservations for the club at a destination marina. That was not done at Cape Charles for Memorial Day weekend.
