OPCYC's Pointer Maritime University ("PMU" for short) is in the middle of its third year. Our mission is to provide free quality instruction on maritime issues of interest to our membership. We cover pretty much any subject that is boating-related and of interest to our membership. The level of instruction is geared to the majority of our students - when we talk first aid, we're not discussing sunburn, minor cuts, or jellyfish stings. We're covering heatstroke, heart attack, and amputation. But when we do knot-tying, we'll show you the reef knot and bowline as well as a fisherman's bend, rolling hitch, and anchor bend. One thing we have is great instructors. This is not the blind leading the blind - we have instructors with many transatlantic passages, perennial race winners, technical subject matter experts, and Emergency Medical Technicians.
In 2007, our second year of operation, we had 19 different classes on 16 separate class days. We had 394 student-days, and 123 different students in 2007. Chuck and Diane Walters are the valedictorians of the class of 2007, having attended eleven classes each. Thirty-six people attended more than four classes - each of these people will get a "diploma" suitable for framing from PMU.
As of the end of March 2008, we have had classes on 18 different subjects over ten calendar days. So far, we have 315 student-days and 111 different students - and no, they are not all the same students we had last year. Even with fewer class days this year, we're on track to graduate more students than last year.
Mark Wolfe joined me as the Vice Dean for the 2007 season, and has been a great help. He helped select classes and class days, arranged and set up classrooms, and even signed up instructors.
Stay tuned to the Web Site and the Helmsman for updates as we get closer to other PMU events. In addition to these, if your E-Mail address is registered on OPCYC's database, and if you live within driving distance of OPCYC, we'll keep you posted with frequent updates and reminders during the school year. If you live more than 50 miles away but would still like to get updates anyway, E-Mail me to tell me that and I'll include you on the update list. If you would prefer not to get PMU E-Mail updates, just drop me an E-Mail and let me know, and I'll take you off the list.
See you in the classroom, and see you on the water!

The class for Sat 19 Jan & the class on Sat 2 Feb will be at the OPCYC Clubhouse - NOT at the Fitness Center. The remaining classes in Feb, March, and April will be at the Ft. Monroe Fitness Center. The Weather class on 10 May (same day as the Blessing of the Fleet) will be at the OPCYC Clubhouse.
