Pointer Maritine University : Coast Guard Courtesy Inspections
Posted by Jeff Rogers on 2008/5/5 22:13:16 (7 reads)

Sat 10 May (OPCM Docks)
Keith “Boomer” Barber is helping us arrange for Coast Guard courtesy inspections on May 10th, the same day as the Weather class and the Blessing of the Fleet. Even if you haven’t done so yet, you can still schedule a courtesy inspection on OPCYC’s Web site under “Event Registration - PMU”. We’ll work the inspections around the class and the blessing, so you can do everything you want. Just tell us the time frame when you’d like to be inspected, and we’ll work you in.

Pointer Maritine University : PMU’s last scheduled sit-down class: Interpreting Weather Reports and Predictions

Sat 10 May 0900-1100 (OPCYC Clubhouse)
Bill Sammler, the warning coordination meteorologist for NOAA, has agreed to teach us about weather on the 10th of May. Dana used to say “forget the weather forecast; let’s just go out there early and put up the wrong sail right away so we can get the right one up by the time the race starts.” But Bill has science behind him and wants to explain away some of the mysteries of weather.

Pointer Maritine University : PMU Classes Held in April
Posted by Jeff Rogers on 2008/5/5 22:11:03 (4 reads)

The 12V Doctor, Eric Alspaugh from Boat Works, Inc.
Eric gave us a lot to think about regarding how to make electrical load calculations, how to match the battery system to the expected loads, protecting electronics and batteries, battery charging options, and designing reliability into your boat’s electrical system.

First Mate Training, Eileen & Michael Turner
Michael and Eileen explained the why’s and wherefore’s of many common boating tasks, such as preparing the boat for departure from the slip, docking, rafting up, anchoring, provisioning, and crew-skipper communication. This training was held as a forum, where participants shared ideas and presented their “lessons learned” to the others.

Pointer Maritine University : PMU Poetry
Posted by Jeff Rogers on 2008/5/5 22:09:24 (3 reads)

The low sandy beach and the thin scrub pine,
The wide reach of bay and the long sky line,—
O, I am sick for home!

The salt, salt smell of the thick sea air,
And the smooth round stones that the ebb tides wear,—
When will the good ship come?
The wretched stumps all charred and burned,
And the deep soft rut where the cartwheel turned,—
Why is the world so old?

The lapping wave, and the broad gray sky
Where the cawing crows and the slow gulls fly,
Where are the dead untold?

The thin, slant willows by the flooded bog,
The huge stranded hulk and the floating log,
Sorrow with life began!

And among the dark pines, and along the flat shore,
O the wind, and the wind, for evermore!
What will become of man?

- George Santayana
